The Splash Lab seeks to unravel the physical mechanisms of fluid behaviors, through a novel 3D volumetric measurement method known as Synthetic Aperture Imaging and imbedded instrumentation (e.g., accelerometers, etc). We experimentally analyze fluid systems such as fluid-structure interactions, multi-phase flows, and free surface phenomena. Currently, we are funded by the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation to improve our imaging techniques and elucidate topics from sk

Building a DIY ROV Viscometer: A Deep Dive into Fluid Dynamics and Engineering

Ever wondered how to measure the viscosity of seawater in real-time from an ROV? Sean Brown's project tackles this challenge, revealing the pitfalls and ingenuity involved in building a surprisingly complex onboard viscometer. Let’s break down the build and discuss why this is peak Digital Stripling territory.

Wireless Power Through Water? Resonant Inductive Coupling & the Future of Self-Hosting

Dan Nelson's BYU project explores resonant inductive coupling for wireless power transfer, hinting at a future where our self-hosted devices could draw power even when sealed from the elements. This isn't just about convenience; it's about reclaiming control over our infrastructure.
