Brothers and sisters, as we continue our journey in the field—whether that field is a mission field across the globe, or simply our living rooms across the internet—we keep running into these moments. Moments where the focus seems to drift from the heart of the Gospel to the minutiae of the observance. It can feel like we're debating the perfect way to fold a handkerchief when what the Spirit is truly calling us to is something far deeper.

I was recently digging into some scriptures, looking at Mark chapter 7, and it really struck me. The Pharisees and scribes corner Jesus over something seemingly small: unwashed hands while eating. It sounds like a minor hygiene issue, right? But what they were really doing was making a massive, judgmental pronouncement about the disciples' adherence to tradition versus the pure truth being taught.

It’s easy, when we’re doing the work, to get bogged down in the *how*—the perfect opening question, the right testimony anecdote, the flawless presentation of the plan of salvation. We can get so focused on the 'rite' that we forget the 'reality.' This passage is a powerful reminder that the Law, and indeed any commandment, is only meaningful when it points us back to the Spirit and to Christ.

The Spirit Over the Letter

What the scribes were focused on was the precise, ceremonial washing of hands—a detailed ritual with specific prayers and movements. It was all about adherence to the 'tradition of the elders.' Jesus, in His infinite wisdom, didn't engage in a debate about hand-washing technique. He addressed the heart of the matter: where does true purity come from?

The core message here, the one that echoes so loudly for us as rogue disciples, is that spiritual cleansing isn't achieved by following a checklist of rules. It comes from the inside out. It comes from the Savior Himself. I was so focused on the *performance* of being a missionary disciple that I nearly forgot to simply *be* a disciple. The Spirit taught me that day that the best testimony I could give wasn't about doctrine; it was about the quiet, persistent feeling of peace that comes when I trust the Lord, regardless of what the circumstances look like.
