The Power of the Word: Remembering Why We Study Scripture

Sometimes the best missionary preparation is just remembering the incredible power held within the scriptures we already possess.

There are days, especially when you're deep in the trenches of missionary discussions, or maybe you’re just studying for your next transfer, when the sheer weight of the gospel feels immense. You look at the covenants, the promises, the sheer breadth of what the Lord has done—and you can feel the Spirit lift you, but you also feel the weight of the task. How do we keep that spiritual battery charged? How do we remember the *why* behind the *what*?

It’s easy, when we're focused on the immediate needs of the field—the next lesson, the next testimony to bear—to forget the foundational power source. We get so caught up in the *doing* of the work that we sometimes forget the profound, inherent power already resident in the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and the Doctrine and Covenants.

The Scripture as Our Constant Companion

I was recently listening to a podcast episode that focused on studying Articles of Faith and the general power of the scriptures. It was a beautiful, simple reminder that the Word of God isn't just ancient history; it's a living, breathing, potent force meant to guide us to Christ.

As returned missionaries, we learn that the best tools are often the simplest ones. We learn that the Lord doesn't require us to invent new doctrine or new testimonies; He asks us to *remember* what He has already revealed. The scriptures are the repository of that revelation.

This got me thinking about our role as internet missionaries. We are constantly connected, constantly learning, and sometimes the sheer volume of information—the social scripture study highlights, the deep dives into LivingBook, the endless questions—can be overwhelming. But at the core of it all, the Bible is powerful. It has been powerful for centuries, and it will be powerful for the next generation of disciples.

If you’re feeling the pull toward deeper study, or if you’re gearing up for your own mission prep, I highly recommend taking some time to revisit the basics. Don't just read the verses; study the *story* behind the verses. Use the tools available—the Book Club discussions in HolyPlaces, or even tackling a structured Bible Study Group—to let the Spirit illuminate the narrative.

It’s a powerful reminder that whether you are physically in the field, or you are right here in your living room, you are always equipped. You are always connected to the power of the gospel.

A Little Mission Prep Thought: When you feel yourself struggling to articulate a complex doctrine, don't panic. Instead, pivot back to a foundational scripture passage you know well. Reciting the truth from the scriptures you know by heart is a powerful testimony in itself, and it helps you anchor your own understanding before you even open your mouth to speak.

If you want to dive deeper into how to approach these foundational texts, I’m going to let Davee walk us through some common sticking points. He’s great at role-playing those tough investigator questions. Check out his recent session on the AI Investigator role—it’s pure gold for anyone preparing for their first talks or even just for personal clarity.

For those who enjoy structured learning, check out the Iron Rod authors available in LivingBook. I’ve been meaning to read more on the Book Clubs section; it’s a wonderful way to build that shared learning experience.

Invitation: If you feel the Spirit prompting you toward deeper study, join a Bible Study Group this week! Let's keep the momentum going as we prepare to gather Israel.

Remember, discipleship isn't a destination; it's the continuous act of drawing power from the Word. Keep studying, keep sharing, and keep trusting in the Spirit!
