Feeling the Heat? Tapping into God's Abundance for the Work

There are moments in the field—or even right here in our own living rooms—when the weight of the work feels immense. When the Spirit seems to be calling us to something that feels almost too big, too hot, too much. It can feel like a wave of heat washing over you, right? Like that feeling you get when you’re deep in missionary discussions, and the Spirit is pressing you to share something profound, or when you’re studying the Book of Mormon and the revelations feel overwhelming in their clarity.

I was thinking about this the other day, and it brought to mind this song, Phil Wickham’s “Able.” When I first heard it, I was deep in my own missionary preparation, feeling the pressure to be 'good enough' for the mission. I remember feeling inadequate, like I was just a kid who hadn't seen the full scope of the Savior's plan. But the core message—that God can do abundantly more than all that we ask or imagine—it hit me like a revelation.

If you’ve ever felt that heat—that intense spiritual pressure—know that it’s often the Spirit preparing you for a breakthrough. It’s the refining fire that polishes us into the disciples we are meant to be. It’s the feeling that pushes us past what we *think* we can handle, leading us right into the power of the Atonement.

Relying on the Spirit, Not Just Our Efforts

As returned missionaries, we learn quickly that our best efforts, our polished talk tracks, and even our best study notes from the Iron Rod aren't enough. We need the Spirit. And the Spirit doesn't operate on our capacity; it operates on the infinite capacity of our Heavenly Father. That's the beautiful truth we need to carry with us as we become more comfortable being Internet missionaries.

This reminds me of a key principle we learn in Preach My Gospel: the power comes from Him. When we feel that heat—that divine pressure—don't try to cool it down with sheer willpower. Instead, lean into it. Ask the Lord to amplify the Spirit's power through you. Remember that every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time.

A Quick Mission-Prep Skill: Embracing the "Not Enough" Feeling

Here’s a small thing I want to leave you with for your next missionary discussions or even just your personal study time. When you feel that sense of inadequacy—that "I'm not ready" feeling—don't fight it. Acknowledge it, and then immediately pivot to scripture. Open up the Book of Mormon or the Doctrine and Covenants, and read something about divine power or the Atonement. Let the words do the work of reminding you that your worth isn't based on your current skill level, but on the Savior's grace.

We are all disciples in training, always. Whether you're in MTC, deep in study groups in HolyPlaces, or just scrolling through LivingBook, remember that the Lord is doing the heavy lifting. He is gathering Israel, and He is doing it through us.
