Getting Our Boots on the Ground: Brush for Bucks and the Real Work of Conservation

Josh Austin and Lone Canyon Outfitters have always shown us the value of honest work and stewardship. This year’s Brush for Bucks conservation project embodies that same spirit – a chance to directly impact vital habitat for thousands of mule deer.

There’s a certain satisfaction that comes from knowing you’ve done something tangible, something that benefits the land and the creatures that depend on it. We’ve talked here before about the importance of understanding the whole system – the predator-prey relationships, the migration patterns, the delicate balance of an ecosystem. It’s not enough to just harvest an animal; a true hunter stewards the land that provides.

The Hushin crew, alongside partners like First Lite and the Mule Deer Foundation, are putting that philosophy into action with their annual Brush for Bucks conservation project. As Steven Rinella often reminds us, hunting isn't just about filling the freezer; it's about being a responsible member of the landscape. It’s about recognizing the debt we owe and working to repay it.

This year's focus is on a critical migration route north of Snowville, Utah—an area devastated by the 2020 Black Pine Fire. Over 6,000 mule deer rely on this area to transition to wintering grounds, and the loss of vital browse has made survival increasingly difficult. It's a stark reminder of the power of nature, and the responsibility we have to help restore what's been lost.

The scale of the effort is impressive: nearly 25,000 sagebrush and bitterbrush seedlings are slated for planting. That’s a whole lot of work, and that’s where we – the Rogue Hunters – come in. This isn’t some theoretical conservation exercise; it’s getting your boots on the ground, working alongside like-minded folks, and making a real difference.

Hushin's approach, like Josh Austin’s work in Bookcliffs, is rooted in a deep understanding of the land. It’s about more than just planting trees; it's about understanding the interconnectedness of things. Joel and Logan Hennig, and the whole Hushin team, are showing us that true conservation isn't just about policy and regulations; it's about the sweat equity of dedicated individuals.

The event itself is more than just planting; it’s a community gathering. A shirt, an OnX Premium membership, an MDF membership, and a raffle ticket are all part of the package, but the real value lies in the shared purpose and the camaraderie. It's a chance to connect with fellow hunters, learn from experienced conservationists, and contribute to something bigger than ourselves. Randy Newberg often talks about the importance of community in hunting, and this event exemplifies that perfectly.

Think of it this way: David facing Goliath wasn't just about skill with a sling; it was about courage, preparation, and faith in something larger than himself. The Black Pine Fire was Goliath – a destructive force that threatened the health of the ecosystem. Our participation in Brush for Bucks is our sling – a direct and meaningful action we can take to face that challenge.

For those who can't attend, the Mule Deer Foundation is accepting donations, and 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Brush for Bucks. It’s a chance to support the cause even from afar.

If you're looking for a way to connect with the land, contribute to conservation, and build community, this is it. Get your tickets now – they won't last. And remember what Cameron Hanes often says: 'Get after it!'
