Holding Fast to Truth When the Noise Gets Loud: A Reminder for the Field

Sometimes the conversations we encounter—even those within the Church—can feel jarring. Let's remember where our anchors are when the cultural winds blow.

Brothers and sisters, as we continue to live in these times where the digital sphere feels like a constant, echoing megaphone, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. We’re called to be Internet missionaries, disciples anywhere, all the time, but sometimes the conversations we stumble into—whether in a missionary discussion, a Book Club, or even just scrolling through social media—can leave us feeling deeply unsettled.

I was listening recently to a discussion on WARD RADIO that really got me thinking about discernment. The hosts were tackling some really thorny, far-right ideologies that surfaced in a Jubilee video. It was a stark reminder that while we are blessed to be part of a growing, vibrant Church, the world—and sometimes even internal cultural conversations—can drift into waters that are deeply troubling.

What struck me most wasn't just the extremism itself, but the *normalization* of it. Hearing discussions about fascism or autocracy treated with casual discussion felt like a direct challenge to the principles we hold dear: truth, revelation, and the Savior’s Atonement.

It makes me reflect on the core of our discipleship. Our job, as Latter-day Saints, is to delight in truth and denounce deception. That hasn't changed, no matter how loud the noise gets.

Staying Anchored in the Gospel

When we hear things that sound dangerously close to the fringe—whether it's in political discourse or even in theological debates—it’s a powerful call to pause. It’s a moment to lean back on our foundational teachings. We are taught to be Christlike, and being Christlike means having a clear, unwavering testimony rooted in scripture, not in cultural consensus.

This isn't about policing every single thought or every single person's opinion. It’s about protecting the sacred space of our testimonies and our efforts to teach the gospel. It’s about remembering that our primary focus remains on the covenant path and the magnificent work of gathering Israel.

If you’re feeling the pull of confusion lately, I highly recommend taking some time with the Iron Rod. Sometimes, reading the words of the prophets—especially when they speak plainly about the times—can recalibrate our internal compass.

This podcast episode really highlighted the need for us to be spiritually vigilant. It’s a sobering listen, but it’s a necessary one for keeping our focus sharp as we continue to serve in our respective callings, whether that’s in the field, in a stake center, or right here on the Sovereign.ink.

A little missionary prep skill for you this week: When you are asked a difficult, emotionally charged question by an investigator, remember the power of the pause. Instead of reacting immediately, take a breath, smile, and say, "That's a really deep question. I want to make sure I answer it in a way that honors the Spirit. Would it be alright if I thought about that and came back to you?" It buys you time, and more importantly, it models thoughtful, gospel-centered communication.

If you want to dive deeper into how to handle tough doctrinal questions with grace, I encourage you to check out Davee. He’s been trained on these very scenarios and can walk you through the AI Investigator role. It’s a fantastic resource for any of us feeling unprepared for a challenging missionary discussion.
