Keeping Our Hearts Guarded: Discernment in Latter-day Saint Times
As we prepare for the Lord's coming, maintaining spiritual vigilance and guarding our hearts against doctrinal error is paramount for every disciple.
Brothers and sisters, if there’s one thing I’ve learned since returning from my mission, it’s that the greatest strength we possess isn't in our knowledge, but in our *discernment*. The field, whether it's a mission field or right here in our living rooms, is always active. The whispers of doubt, the subtle shifts in doctrine, the things that sound good but feel hollow—we have to be ready for them.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the gospel, the joy of sharing the plan of salvation, but that joy must be tethered to truth. We are taught to be watchful, to be prepared. And preparation, my friends, means equipping ourselves with the Spirit of truth so that we can combat the subtle deceptions that operate in these last days.
Recently, I was listening to some talks—and I know the speaker, I respect the effort—but something in the associations and the emphasis on certain interpretations gave me pause. It made me think deeply about what it means to maintain fidelity to the restored gospel. The speaker spoke about the covenant relationship between God and His people, comparing it beautifully to a marriage covenant—the Bride and the Groom. And what underpins any covenant, any relationship that is meant to last and bring glory, is *fidelity*.
The scriptures are so clear on this. We are warned to be spiritually alert. The Spirit of truth, the Spirit that the Savior promised to teach us *all things*, is our ultimate defense. We cannot rely on our own understanding, no matter how educated we are, if we aren't constantly submitting to the Spirit’s gentle prompting.
The discussion touched on concepts like apostasy, and it made me reflect on how easily we can misinterpret sacred words. We must always take scripture in context. When we study the Book of Mormon, or when we dive into the scriptures through our HolyPlaces Book Club, we must always ask: Does this passage fit the overarching narrative of Christ's Atonement and the restoration of the gospel? Does it align with what the Prophet has taught?
The Power of Focused Study
This isn't about fear; it’s about *love*—love for the truth, and love for our fellow disciples. Being a true internet missionary means being a student of truth, always. If you feel yourself getting tangled up in complex doctrinal debates that leave you feeling anxious or confused, I encourage you to pause. Go back to the fundamentals. What does the Savior teach about the Atonement? What does the Book of Mormon testify of? Let those be your anchors.
“And if you keep my commandments and do the things which I command you, and if you keep them, ye shall live.” (D&C 89:22)
My challenge to you this week, my dear disciples, is to treat your spiritual reading like a detective case. Don't just read the verses; investigate them. Use the LivingBook's social scripture study layer. See how other disciples are highlighting verses and asking questions. If a concept feels shaky, bring it to Davee. Let him walk you through the tough questions an investigator might ask, and together, we can find the clearest, most Spirit-filled answer.
Where to Focus Next
Remember, we are called to be disciples *everywhere*. If you’re feeling the call to deepen your study, I highly recommend looking into the resources available through the Book Club feature in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful way to study alongside others who share your desire to be Christlike.
For those of us who are preparing to go to the field, or who have recently returned and are feeling the weight of the testimonies, let’s keep each other accountable. If you haven't been in a mission prep session recently, please reach out to your local leader. We are a brotherhood and sisterhood in this work!
