More Than a Label: Defining Our Identity as Disciples

In a world obsessed with labels, remember that our true, enduring designation belongs only to Christ. How can we prioritize the work?

There are days when the noise of the world can be deafening. We see our identities constantly being defined—by our careers, our politics, our friendships, or the group we belong to. It’s easy, especially today, to feel that our most important descriptor is the one that gets the most likes, the most nods of agreement, or the most affirmation from our echo chamber.

As a returned missionary, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is to strip away all those external labels. Out in the field, you quickly learn that what truly matters isn't who you say you are, or what banner you wave—it's who you are striving to become.

The Enduring Designations

A recent talk by our Prophet was incredibly powerful because he spoke directly to the danger of labels. He taught that when we allow any identifier—be it political, social, or cultural—to take priority, it can become spiritually suffocating. The adversary, bless his heart, rejoices in labels because they divide us and restrict the way we think about ourselves and each other.

The Prophet reminds us that no identifier should displace, replace, or take priority over these three enduring designations: Child of God, child of the covenant, and disciple of Jesus Christ.

Think about that for a moment. Those designations are not based on our achievements, our vote, or even our adherence to the latest social trend. They are based on covenant, on grace, and on the Spirit. They are eternal.

Making Christ Our Priority

One friend shared a wonderful analogy: Satan doesn't care if you leave to the right or to the left; he just cares that you leave. This hits home, doesn't it? Our spiritual mission is to ensure that nothing—not the perceived safety of a political group, nor the comfort of a social circle—can ever take precedence over Christ. If we allow anything to replace the center of our hearts, we risk losing the very power that Christ offers for change and for good.

This is the essence of being an internet missionary today. Our field isn't just a physical district; it's the digital space, the family gathering, the workplace. Our greatest skill isn't knowing the right talking points; it's maintaining the sacred priority of Christ in every single conversation.

A Bite-Sized Mission-Prep Skill: The Spiritual Pivot

If you’re prepping for mission discussions or just engaging in meaningful conversations with friends who might be questioning, remember the spiritual pivot. When the conversation gets bogged down in labels or external issues, gently, but firmly, guide it back to the Savior. Instead of debating the external issue, ask, “What does the Savior teach about this?” or “How does the Spirit guide us to answer this?”

This isn't about winning an argument; it's about pointing people back to the source of light. It's about being Christlike in the moment, regardless of the perceived difficulty.

Your Role in the Work

Whether you are a full-time missionary, a seasoned returned missionary, or a lifelong disciple who loves to study, your role is to keep the three designations—Child of God, child of the covenant, and disciple of Jesus Christ—at the forefront of your heart. This is the work. This is where the Spirit dwells.

  • Action Item: Identify one area this week where you feel tempted to define yourself or others by a label rather than by Christ’s love.
  • Study Resource: To deepen this focus, I highly recommend checking out the Iron Rod. It has some fantastic insights on maintaining spiritual clarity in a confusing world.

Let’s commit to being known foremost by the power of Christ, not by the labels of the world. We are disciples, and that is the most powerful identity of all.
