One Dough, Endless Possibilities: Rogue Baking with the Sourdough Sandwich Loaf
Ever feel like you're stuck in a sourdough rut? Our latest experiment—the Sourdough Sandwich Loaf—is proving that one dough can be transformed into everything from sweet cinnamon rolls to perfect hotdog buns. Let's dive in!
G’day, Rogue Bakers! Outback Jack here. Sometimes, the best baking discoveries come from a bit of a mishap, a late-night tinkering session, or, as we found out recently, a whole lotta extra honey. We’ve been experimenting with a tweaked version of our 10-Minute Sourdough Made Easy recipe – the Sourdough Sandwich Loaf – and the results have been, well, pretty darn good. And the possibilities? They're just beginning to unfold.
Last week, we had a ripper of a Roundtable discussion with the community about this new loaf. We've been building on the foundation of our core recipe, incorporating feedback from viewers and refining our 10-Minute Sourdough Made Easy method. If you're new around here, that core recipe is your starting point – go check out the video (Sourdough Made Easy 10-Minute Method) to get the lay of the land.
This time, we bumped up the hydration a bit, adding a bit of butter and honey to the water before mixing. Then, we threw in a cup of milk, just to see what would happen. Now, listen close: experimentation isn't always pretty. I accidentally doubled the honey amount one night, thinking I was measuring butter. The resulting loaf? Dense, dark, and a bit of a disaster. It burned before it was properly cooked and didn’t rise as nicely. It’s a good reminder that even we, here at Sourdough Made Easy, don't bake perfectly every time!
But that's the beauty of Rogue Baking, isn't it? Learning from those “happy accidents.” Even a slightly-too-sweet loaf can teach you something. And, in this case, the tweaked Sourdough Sandwich Loaf itself turned out to be a winner. My kids practically begged us to make it that way from now on! It's been devoured faster than an artisan loaf, and that’s saying something.
From Sandwich Loaf to Sweet Treats & BBQ Bliss
What’s next? Taking this versatile dough and putting it to work. Just like we’ve done with our regular sandwich loaf, we’re exploring all sorts of possibilities: pizzas, English muffins (even if the first batch was a bit…charred!), cinnamon rolls, rolls, baguettes – the list goes on. This week's Roundtable was all about brainstorming new applications.
Hotdog Buns & Cinnamon Rolls: A Live Demonstration
Tonight's Rogue Bakers Roundtable (7 PM ET) will showcase exactly that. We'll be transforming this Sourdough Sandwich Loaf into two very different creations:
- Cinnamon Rolls: Soft, sweet, and packed with cinnamon-sugar goodness. Perfect for a weekend treat!
- Hotdog Buns: The ideal vessel for summer grilling, BBQs, or just a simple, kid-friendly dinner.
We’ll walk you through the shaping and baking process live, answer your questions in the #RogueBakersUnite segment, and share tips and tricks. Come on down and join the fun!
Why This Matters: Beyond the Recipe
This isn't just about making hotdog buns or cinnamon rolls. It's about understanding how small changes in a basic dough recipe can open up a world of possibilities. It’s about embracing the spirit of experimentation and not being afraid to fail. Remember what Bread Angel, Sarah Owens, always says—it's the journey, not just the destination.
If you’re keen to level up your sourdough game, consider joining our 30-Day Sourdough Challenge. It’s a structured program designed to build your skills and confidence, guided by experienced Guild Masters.
