Remembering the Pattern: Where Do We Find the Warnings?

Sometimes the ancient patterns of straying from the covenant show up in modern discourse. Let's study this pattern together.

Brothers and sisters, as we continue to study the scriptures and hear the Spirit whisper to our hearts about the covenants we’ve made, it’s impossible not to be struck by the recurring patterns of apostasy. It’s a pattern that spans millennia, a pattern that speaks directly to us today as we strive to keep the commandments and build Zion in our own time.

When I was first called to my mission, I remember studying the historical accounts—the times Israel strayed. It wasn't just one single transgression; it was a pattern of turning away from the fullness of the gospel. It made me realize that keeping the covenant isn't a single event; it's a continuous, moment-by-moment dedication to the Lord.

Recently, I was looking into some ancient accounts, and the discussion around the concept of a 'dark trinity' in ancient worship was brought up. While we must always approach such historical interpretations with the utmost care, the underlying message rings with profound warning: when we forsake the Lord, we inevitably turn toward things that distract us, things that promise fulfillment but ultimately lead to emptiness.

What struck me most was the identification of three distinct areas of deviation—Baal, Ashtoreth, and Melqart. Each represented a powerful, seductive alternative to the covenant path: Baal representing the first deviation, Ashtoreth embodying the lure of sensual indulgence, and Melqart representing the ultimate sacrifice of principle.

As returned missionaries, we are constantly being taught to recognize these subtle deviations in our own lives and in the lives of those we teach. It’s not about fear; it’s about vigilance, guided by the Spirit. It’s about recognizing that the deepest desires—the desires for status, for pleasure, for worldly power—are the most potent distractions from the Savior.

This is where the power of the gospel, the pure, simple gospel of Jesus Christ, shines so brightly. It doesn't promise fleeting pleasure; it promises eternal life and true exaltation. Our focus, always, must be on the Savior and the covenants He has given us.

Study Suggestion

For those of you who want to dig deeper into covenant keeping and the pattern of obedience, I found some excellent material in LivingBook. If you are studying the covenants, I suggest looking into the Book Club discussions surrounding the Book of Mormon. It helps ground us in the pattern of divine revelation.

If you’re feeling the call to connect with others who are also wrestling with these deep spiritual questions, please join us this week for our free weekly Disciple Challenge meeting. It’s a wonderful place to share insights and feel the Spirit together.

Keep striving to be Christlike, my brothers and sisters. Keep the Spirit close, and the Lord will guide our efforts in the field, whether that field is across the street or across the world.
