Remembering the Veil: Our Eternal Journey Back to the Father
A powerful reminder that our life here is a sacred preparation for eternity, drawing strength from the teachings of Alma and the Savior.
Brothers and sisters, sometimes when I’m studying the scriptures, or even just sitting quietly with my study group, I get hit with this profound wave of gratitude. It’s a feeling that washes over you—a sense of *home* that you can’t quite place. You think, 'Wait, what was before this life? What was life like before we were given these bodies, before we knew the weight of our choices here on earth?'
It’s a question that has weighed on the hearts of so many of us—those of us who have been through the crucible of the mission field, those of us who are still preparing, and those of us who are just trying to keep the commandments day-to-day. We are all disciples, whether we are in the MTC, in a foreign land, or right here in our living rooms.
The recent video we watched really dove into this: the journey from our premortal existence, through the veil, and into the glorious, sometimes messy, reality of mortality. It’s a deep dive into the Plan of Salvation, and honestly, it makes you humble in a way that nothing else can.
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend taking the time to watch it. It’s a beautiful, comprehensive look at why we are here and what it means to keep the covenants we make.
The Great Purpose: Preparation, Not Just Passing Through
What struck me most, and what I want us to meditate on this week, is the concept of this life being a *probationary state*. It’s not just a pit stop; it’s the divinely appointed workshop where we are meant to become more like our Heavenly Father. Alma’s counsel rings so true: "Behold this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God."
Think about that. We are given agency—the incredible gift of choice—and with that gift comes the responsibility to *improve*. We are meant to prove ourselves by keeping the commandments, no matter how difficult the tests get. This isn't just about avoiding sin; it’s about actively striving toward virtue, uprightness, and faithfulness. It’s about *becoming* Christlike.
Being a Disciple Anywhere, All the Time
This concept—that we are always preparing—is what makes being a disciple so revolutionary. It means that whether you are having a difficult missionary discussion, or whether you are just struggling to keep your promises to your family, you are in the work. You are ministering. You are preparing. You are gathering Israel, right where you are.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the sheer scope of eternity, remember the pattern: focus on the next right thing. Focus on the gospel of Jesus Christ, as restored to us. That is the life-giving purpose. That is the goal we work toward every single day.
If you’re looking for a way to anchor this truth this week, I highly recommend diving into the teachings on the Plan of Salvation. If you’ve been wanting to dig deeper into the scriptural foundations, check out a Book Club in HolyPlaces, or maybe even try a Bible Study Group. Sometimes hearing it from another brother or sister, or wrestling with it in a small setting, helps it click into place.
For those of us who are still in the prep phase, or who are newly returned, I want to point you toward Davee. He’s fantastic for walking through those tough questions—the ones an investigator might ask when they are wrestling with the concept of premortality. He can guide you through answering those tough questions with grace and knowledge.
Let’s keep building bridges of faith together. Don't let the day of repentance be postponed until the very end. Let’s make every day count toward that glorious return!
