Showing Up: The Power of Presence in the Work
Whether it's a family crisis or a missionary discussion, Christ teaches us that showing up—being present—is one of the most powerful ways to share the Gospel.
There are times when the most profound missionary work doesn't involve a scripture quote or a perfect testimony; sometimes, it just involves showing up. It's about presence. It's about the quiet consistency of knowing someone cares, even when the words get hard to find.
As returned missionaries, we learn quickly that the field is full of wonderful people, but the hardest part of the work is often realizing that the people we love are going through their own invisible battles—a difficult breakup, a job loss, a family strain.
It reminded me of a little family vlog I watched recently. The family was visiting their adopted son, who was going through a really tough time after a breakup. They didn't try to fix it; they just showed up and did all his favorite things. They were a constant source of love and distraction. It was a beautiful, humbling reminder that Christ’s companionship is often demonstrated not by grand pronouncements, but by consistent, loving presence.
Being Present: A Missionary Skill
This principle—the power of simply being present—is perhaps the most critical skill we can hone in our discipleship today. We are called to be internet missionaries, disciples wherever we are, all the time. This isn't just for times of crisis; it's for the day-to-day moments when a friend mentions they are having a rough week, or when you are preparing for a difficult missionary discussion.
When we are ministering, we often feel the pressure to be perfect, to have the right answer, or to deliver the ultimate 'Aha!' moment. But the Spirit often whispers that the greatest gift we can give is our undivided attention. It’s listening without the immediate need to counsel, and loving without the need to judge.
“And when ye shall come into the strait gate, ye shall find me, and I will ever be with you, even unto the end of the world.” – Doctrine and Covenants 20:76.
Think about that promise. It’s not a promise of perfect circumstances; it’s a promise of constant companionship. When we adopt that mindset—that we are simply showing up with Christ's companionship—our approach to the work shifts. We stop trying to 'perform' the Gospel and start simply *living* it.
If you've been feeling stretched thin lately, or if you're preparing for a mission discussion and feel anxious about what to say, remember this. Focus on the invitation to *know* the Savior. Focus on the questions the Spirit is asking you to ask, not the answers you feel you need to provide. That is where the real discipleship happens.
Your Next Step in Discipleship
How do we practice this radical presence? We start with our own hearts and our own study. I highly recommend diving into the Book Club feature in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful way to practice deep listening and empathy with your fellow disciples. You aren't just reading the text; you are engaging in the social scripture study layer, sharing insights and helping each other bear testimony. It’s practice for the field, right in your living room.
If you feel ready to practice this skill before your next mission prep meeting, check out our free weekly Disciple Challenge! It's designed to help us integrate the principles of Christ's companionship into our daily lives, whether we are talking to an investigator or just having dinner with our family. Let's keep the momentum going!
Remember that the goal of our movement is that every member can be an internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Let's go show up for the Lord and for each other.
