The Gospel Connection: Being a Disciple Wherever the Spirit Leads
How can we be effective missionaries when we're not physically in the field? We learned that the Spirit gathers us together, whether we are across the globe or in our living rooms.
Sometimes, you watch a video like the one linked below, and it just hits you. You see people gathered, singing, worshipping—and they are spread out across different countries, connected only by a screen. It’s a powerful reminder that the gospel doesn't require a physical location; it requires the Spirit.
As returned missionaries, we learn quickly that the Lord’s work is not confined to the boundaries of a single district. The truth is, the gospel is omnipresent. It meets us in our homes, on our commutes, and in our digital lives. This ability to connect across borders—to be gathered virtually—is one of the greatest gifts of our time, and it defines what it means to be an internet missionary.
The Spirit’s Presence: More Than Just a Signal
The speaker in the video emphasized that the Saint Spirit is everywhere. He spoke of how the same God who gathers us in a physical meetinghouse is gathering us across the francophonie, across continents, simply because we are connected to the truth. This idea—that the Spirit is always present—is the foundational principle for every disciple.
When we think about going into the field, we often picture us standing in a park or sitting across a table from an investigator. But what about the digital field? How do we share the gospel through a comment section, or a shared article, or a friendly online discussion? This is where our understanding of missionary preparation needs to evolve. Being a disciple today means being a digital witness.
Being a Disciple Anywhere, All the Time
If you are a pre-missionary, or a lifelong disciple, or even a parent managing a busy household, remember that you are already in the field. Your primary assignment is to be Christlike and to share the light. This is the core message of the Rogue Disciples movement: every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time.
Here is a bite-sized skill we all need to practice: The Skill of Online Sensitivity. When you encounter an investigator online, don't just post doctrine; post *connection*. Ask thoughtful questions. Share a principle, not a pamphlet. If a topic is sensitive, don't try to solve it yourself. Instead, guide them to the resources we have. This is where tools like Davee, our AI Investigator co-pilot, shine. He can walk you through the hard questions an investigator might ask online—questions about science, history, or the nature of the Atonement—and help you formulate a gentle, Spirit-filled answer.
Remember that our goal in any setting, digital or physical, is not to debate, but to invite. We are inviting them to the Spirit.
Leveraging Our Resources
The Lord has blessed us with amazing tools to help us gather the Spirit's light. If you are looking to deepen your study, I highly recommend diving into the social scripture study layer inside LivingBook. Use the scripture_insight community feed to see how others are applying a verse to their lives—it’s a beautiful, global example of discipleship in action.
And if you want to gather with others, whether you are craving a Book Club or just need a study group, check out HolyPlaces. It is a modern, digital meetinghouse where we can gather together to study and share testimonies, making us feel just as connected as the people in the video.
Your Disciple Challenge
This week, I challenge you to practice being an internet missionary. Identify one area of your life—maybe a social media feed, an email list, or a forum—where you can share a simple, uplifting gospel principle. Don't preach a sermon; simply share a thought that points them toward Christ. It doesn't have to be perfect; it just has to be sincere. That sincerity is what the Spirit sees.
For those of us who want to keep growing together, please join our free weekly Disciple Challenge this Saturday. It’s a perfect opportunity to share tips and testimonies with other dedicated disciples.
Finally, if you feel the Spirit nudging you toward deeper study, I recommend revisiting The Gospel of Jesus Christ by Iron Rod. It remains an essential text for understanding the scope and magnitude of the restored gospel. It's available in LivingBook and perfect for reflection as you prepare for your own missionary journey or simply strengthen your personal testimony.
