The Best Resolution Isn't on a Calendar—It's in the Spirit

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got a folder of New Year’s resolutions somewhere—the one filled with the virtuous intentions we make on December 31st, only to find it gathers dust by February 1st. We set them with the best of intentions, fueled by good will and sheer willpower. We think, “This year, I will finally start meditating for an hour,” or, “This year, I will finally read all the scriptures every day.”

It's easy to feel like the effort is all on us. We feel responsible for our spiritual momentum, like our own *might* is the key ingredient to becoming a better disciple. We are so focused on the 'doing' that we sometimes forget the 'being.' We forget the source.

The beautiful truth, the truth we are constantly learning in our missionary discussions and during our own life’s work, is that the greatest resolutions aren't about human effort; they are about divine empowerment.

It’s Not By Might, But By Spirit

When we look at the scriptures, particularly the words spoken to the people of Israel in Zechariah 4:6, the counsel is crystal clear: “Not by might, nor by great power, but by my Spirit.”

This passage isn't just ancient history; it's the operating manual for the modern disciple. It tells us that whether we are a newly assigned missionary, a returning missionary navigating transfers, or simply a lifelong disciple serving as an internet missionary from our living room, our success isn't measured by our personal charisma or the sheer number of hours we study. It's measured by our reliance on the Spirit.

Our greatest resolution—the one that will never fail—is simply this: to become better witnesses of Jesus Christ.

Making the Resolution to Be a Witness

This idea of being a witness changes everything. It moves the focus away from *fixing* ourselves and toward *sharing* the fix. Being a witness means inviting others to the same power source—the Spirit. It means that when we are doing the daily work—whether it's preparing for an interview, leading a Book Club, or simply helping a neighbor—we are always doing it through the lens of Christ.
