When You Know You Are Seen: Being a Disciple in the Spotlight

There are moments in the work—whether you are in the MTC, serving alongside your companions, or simply having a missionary discussion in your living room—when the feeling of being observed is intense. It’s not necessarily the negative kind of observation, but the kind that makes you pause and wonder: *Am I doing this right? Is this enough?*

The world is constantly trying to define us—to label us as "strangers," or to reduce our complex, Spirit-filled lives into simple, dismissive anecdotes. It can feel like we are constantly running, trying to escape the scrutiny, the pressure, or the skepticism. But the beautiful, undeniable truth of the gospel is this: we can never hide the light of the Savior.

As returned missionaries, we learn that the Spirit is the ultimate witness. He is the one who sees the sincerity behind the awkward question, the vulnerability in the hesitant investigator, and the deep, abiding desire for truth in every heart. When we feel overwhelmed, remember that you are never truly alone in the field. The Spirit is always with you, acting as a constant, gentle witness to your discipleship.

Mission Prep Skill: Embracing the Spotlight

Sometimes, when we are prepping for our mission, we are taught to be gentle and subtle. And we should be! But sometimes, the truth is so vital, the light is so bright, that we can't help but shine it out. My advice for all the future missionaries and current disciples is to practice "embracing the spotlight." When you feel the urge to just whisper the truth, pause. Take a deep breath, and speak it clearly, with the authority of the Spirit. Don't be afraid of the heat; it means the truth is working.

"And it came to pass that the Spirit of the Lord did shine upon him." (Moroni 10:4)

This week, let’s challenge ourselves to identify one place—whether it's a social scripture study, a family discussion, or a quiet moment with our Book Club—where we will deliberately speak the truth with conviction, knowing that the Spirit is our ultimate witness.

When the world throws accusations at us, or when an investigator presents a complex, hard-to-answer question, it can feel like we are standing in that spotlight, exposed.
