The Courage to Teach Truth: Why the Gospel Isn't Always Popular

My brothers and sisters, if you’ve ever stood in a missionary discussion, or perhaps you’ve been in a deep Book Club study, you know that the Spirit doesn't always whisper the easiest words. Sometimes, the truth rings out—clear, strong, and occasionally, a little bit challenging to the comfortable status quo.

It reminds me of something I was pondering recently after watching a talk by Brother Nelson. It spoke directly to the heart of what it means to be a disciple, whether you’re in the MTC, serving in the field, or right here in your own living room as an internet missionary. We are called to teach the gospel, and that gospel, by its very nature, is truth.

We are taught that the Father and the Son love us with infinite, perfect love. And because that love is perfect, it requires divine law. That’s the beautiful tension, isn’t it? God’s love compels us to teach the standards necessary for eternal life, even when those standards might seem unpopular in the cultural moment.

The Weight of Divine Law

The transcript excerpt really hit home for me: "Sometimes we as leaders of the church are criticized for holding firm to the laws of God defending the Savior's Doctrine and resisting the social pressures of our day."

It’s easy to get caught up in the desire to be liked. We want our message to be received gently, to fit seamlessly into the rhythm of conversation. But the Savior’s commission—and by extension, ours as disciples—is to go into all the world to preach His gospel. That means we are commanded to teach truth.

I remember a time early in my own missionary journey when I felt the weight of that. I was trying so hard to make the conversation smooth, to keep the investigator comfortable, that I almost softened a key doctrine. I realized I was prioritizing ease over fidelity. I had to take a deep breath, remember the power of the Spirit guiding me, and teach what I knew to be true, even if it led to a moment of quiet discomfort.

This isn't about being combative; it’s about being *accurate*. It’s about understanding that the reward for keeping God’s laws—the Celestial Kingdom—is infinitely greater than any temporary social comfort. We don't get to modify Divine Law; we are called to proclaim it.

Take a deep breath, and instead of giving a generalized answer, ask yourself: “What is the foundational principle here? What is the *law* I am testifying to?” Grounding your answer in a specific, revealed law helps you stay anchored in the truth.
