The Mind of the Spirit: Understanding Divine Counsel in Our Lives

Sometimes, as we are out in the field—whether that field is a mission territory, a living room during a family discussion, or even just our own quiet moments of prayer—we feel like we are trying to guess what the Spirit wants us to do next. We wait for a clear sign, a flash of revelation, a perfectly timed feeling of peace.

It’s easy to think the Spirit acts like a program running on a set of pre-written responses. But if you’ve spent any time in the preparatory work, or if you’ve been through the intensity of the MTC, you know that the Spirit is so much deeper than that. He has a mind.

I was recently revisiting some deep teachings, specifically Paul’s words in Romans 8. And what struck me, what really made me pause and consider my own understanding of spiritual gifts, was the concept of intercession. The Spirit doesn't just whisper random feelings; He argues our case. He thinks.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to figure out how to best testify of the restored gospel—how to articulate the depth of the Plan of Salvation in a way that truly resonates—this principle is a lifeline. The Spirit is our ultimate Advocate. He is our defense attorney in the courtroom of the Spirit, speaking on our behalf, explaining our innocence, our potential, and the truth of the restored gospel.

It’s a beautiful reminder that discipleship isn't just about *doing* the right things; it’s about being guided by a divine intellect. The fact that He reasons, that He logically arrives at the perfect counsel for us, speaks volumes about the nature of our Heavenly Father and the Atonement.

A Bite of Mission Prep: Thinking Like an Advocate

As we all strive to be better Internet missionaries, we need to remember this concept of divine reasoning. When you are studying for missionary discussions, or when you are preparing to talk to someone about the Book of Mormon, don't just memorize answers. Instead, ask yourself: *What is the most compassionate, reasoned way to guide this person toward the truth?* Try to anticipate the hardest question they might ask, not just the easiest one. That anticipation is practicing the mind of the Spirit.

This understanding deepens our capacity to be Christlike in every interaction. It moves us past simply reciting doctrine and toward embodying divine counsel.
