Brothers and sisters, have you ever been in a deep conversation—maybe you’re in a missionary discussion, or perhaps you’re just studying scriptures with a friend—and you feel that subtle, almost invisible pull? That little tug toward something else? It’s insidious, isn't it?

It got me thinking this week after listening to a recent discussion about Genesis. The analogy used—selling one’s birthright for a bowl of pottage—is powerful enough, but the real kicker for me was the comparison to modern distractions. The speakers shared a story about theme park consultants watching children, and what held their attention? Not the flashy rides or the costumed characters. It was the parents’ cell phones.

It hit me like a revelation while I was trying to keep my phone away during a family gathering. We are so easily captivated by the glowing rectangle. And while the message is clear—put the phone away when you are with people you love—it forces us to ask ourselves: What are we trading? Are we trading sacred, finite time with someone who needs to hear the restored gospel of Jesus Christ for the fleeting dopamine hit of a notification?

Being Christlike in the Digital Age

This isn't just about manners; it’s about discipleship. It’s about stewardship of the most precious commodity we have: focused attention. When we are in the field, whether that field is a literal street corner or a Zoom call with someone who has never heard of the restored gospel, our attention is our primary tool. If our minds are scattered, our testimony sounds scattered. If our focus drifts to the next thing, we miss the divine whisper of the Spirit.

Think about that feeling when you finally connect with someone—an investigator, a friend, a ward member—and you feel that connection deepen. That moment is gold. It’s worth more than any 'mess of pottage' we could ever scroll through. We have to be diligent in guarding our focus, just as we guard our covenants.

A Bite-Sized Mission-Prep Skill: The 'Phone Check'

Here’s a simple skill I want us to practice this week, especially if you’re preparing for your mission or serving as an internet missionary: The 'Phone Check.' Before you enter any significant conversation—whether it’s a planned missionary discussion or just catching up with a friend—physically place your phone out of sight. Not face down, but *out of reach*. If you can’t see it, you are less likely to be tempted by it. Make it a physical covenant with yourself for the duration of that conversation.

Remember that powerful thought shared: "There's going to come a day where you would give anything for 10 more minutes with that person." Let that sink in. Let that be the guiding principle for how we use our time, both with our family and in the service of the Lord.

We are all called to be disciples anywhere, all the time. Let's commit to being fully present for the Lord and for our neighbors.
