The One Word That Changes Everything: Choosing Faithfulness in the Daily Grind

We often chase 'success' or 'happiness,' but the Savior points us to one word that truly defines a life well-lived: faithfulness.

Brothers and sisters, if I were to ask you right now, what is the one word that you want to define your character? What single word summarizes what you stand for in this life? I’ve heard people say 'successful,' 'influential,' or 'happy.' And those are all good things, aren't they? God certainly blesses us when we are successful, and we are called to be salt and light, making an influential difference in the world.

But after wrestling with these concepts, I keep returning to the profound simplicity of the Savior's counsel. When we get to the eternal destination, what will the Master say? It won't be, 'Well done, my successful servant.' It won't be, 'Well done, my happy servant.' No, the word that echoes through eternity, the word that truly matters, is: 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.'

This isn't just another Sunday talk; this is the bedrock of our discipleship. It speaks to the intentionality required to keep the covenant path, day in and day out. Being faithful isn't accidental; it’s a deliberate choice, a commitment we must make before the moment even arrives.

That’s what I want us to focus on today as we continue our study on pre-deciding. We are learning that the quality of our decisions today determines the quality of our lives tomorrow. And the hardest part? The natural trajectory of our lives is toward what is easy—toward convenience.

This is where the Spirit whispers to us, urging us to slow down and ask, 'What would Christ do here?' We can't wait for the heat of the moment to decide to follow Him. We have to practice it. We have to pre-decide.

Who Are We Going To Be?

The message today was powerful in showing us that faithfulness requires more than just feeling good or looking successful. It requires consistent, intentional action. It requires us to look at our lives—our habits, our choices in the temple, our interactions in the ward—and say, 'I am devoted. I am generous. I am faithful.'

Think about that when you’re preparing for your own mission, or even when you’re in your own home. Are you waiting for the perfect, easy moment to serve, or are you making the choice *now* to be faithful, even when it costs you something?

This commitment to faithfulness is what allows us to be true internet missionaries, disciples wherever we are, all the time. It’s what helps us keep the covenant promises we make to our families and to the Lord.

A Small Skill for the Field: Pre-Deciding Your Response

Here’s a small skill I want to pass along to you all this week, something we can practice in our missionary discussions or even in a quiet moment of scripture study:

  1. Identify a Trigger: Think of a common situation that tends to make you react emotionally or poorly (e.g., disagreeing with someone, feeling overwhelmed by work, or facing a difficult question).
  2. Pre-Decide the Spirit-Led Response: Instead of waiting for the moment, pause and ask the Spirit, 'What is the most Christlike, faithful response here?' Write it down.
  3. Affirm It: Say aloud, 'When X happens, I will respond with Y, because I am committed to being faithful.'

This isn't about perfection; it's about intentionality. It's about building the muscle of the Spirit-led decision-maker.

If you want to dig deeper into the mechanics of making better choices, I highly recommend checking out the resources mentioned in the message series. For a deeper dive into how to apply these principles to our covenants, I’m encouraging everyone to check out the Iron Rod authors available in LivingBook. If you are looking for community to discuss these principles, join a Book Club or a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces. Let's keep the momentum going!

What word are *you* choosing this week? Let's be faithful together.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Savior taught that while success, influence, and happiness are good, the ultimate measure of a life pleasing to God is faithfulness. It is the word He will use when we reach our eternal destination.

Identify a common trigger situation, pause before reacting, and intentionally decide beforehand what the Spirit-led, Christlike response will be. This builds the habit of intentionality.
