The Power of Charity: Being Peacemakers in the Digital Field

Following President Nelson's powerful counsel, we discuss how true charity transforms conflict into the greatest missionary tool.

Sometimes, when we’re deep in the work—whether we’re in a missionary discussion, studying in a Book Club, or just trying to navigate a tough comment thread online—it feels like the air itself is thick with tension. We feel the heat of disagreement, and the natural instinct is to defend our doctrine, to correct the misunderstanding, or perhaps, to just… fire back.

It can feel overwhelming. We are called to be ambassadors of the Savior, and sometimes the battlefield feels more like a comment section.

But if you’ve spent any time in the field, or even just wrestling with the principles of Preach My Gospel, you know that the Spirit doesn't favor hostility. It favors something infinitely more powerful, something that requires constant cultivation: Charity.

President Nelson’s recent counsel was a powerful reminder, echoing a call he made years ago: we are called to be peacemakers. And this isn't just a nice sentiment; it’s a divine mandate for those of us who are trying to Gather Israel today.

When we read that anger never persuades, or that contention prevents the Holy Ghost from being our constant companion, it hits you right in the gut. It makes you pause, right there in the middle of a challenging conversation, and ask yourself: Am I operating from conviction, or am I operating from frustration?

This is where the concept of charity moves from being just another virtue we list on a plaque, to being the very foundation of our godly character. It’s the operating system for our discipleship. It means that even when someone is difficult to love—the person who consistently challenges your understanding, or the online commenter who seems determined to provoke—we must remember that charity is a gift from Heavenly Father.

The Internet Missionary Challenge: Charity in Discourse

As internet missionaries, our discourse is often recorded, searchable, and sometimes, painfully public. It’s easy to let the anonymity or the distance of the screen strip away our natural empathy. We can forget that the person on the other side of the screen—the investigator, the skeptic, the neighbor—is trying to connect with the truth, just as we are.

Think about it: True charity doesn't mean agreeing with everything someone says. It means having the *desire* for their eternal well-being, even if their current understanding is wildly off base. It means leading with the gentle, persistent love of Christ, rather than the sharp edge of our own intellect.

This principle is something I’ve been wrestling with lately. I’ve been using Davee’s AI Investigator role to roleplay some of the hardest questions I anticipate in my own future talks. And what keeps coming back is that the *way* I answer matters more than the answer itself. The tone, the patience, the underlying love—that’s the Spirit at work, and that’s what charity powers.

A Bite-Sized Mission-Prep Skill: The Pause

If you take one thing away today, let it be this: Practice the pause. Before you type a response, before you speak your mind in a group setting, take three deep breaths. Mentally repeat, "I will respond with charity." That pause is where the Spirit has room to whisper the right words, the humble words, the words of peace.

It’s a constant plea to our Heavenly Father to fill our hearts with greater charity, especially for those who are difficult to love. That’s the work, friends. That’s the glorious work.

If this message resonated with you, please share it. Let's lift up the standard of discipleship in our comments below. If you’re looking for ways to deepen this study, I highly recommend diving into the recent teachings on this topic within our HolyPlaces Book Club discussions, or perhaps revisiting the principles of peacemaking in the LivingBook scripture study layer.
