The Unfolding Promise: Seeing the Layers of Covenant Like the Spirit Does
Covenants aren't static promises; they are living things, unfolding revelation over time, just like our understanding of the Gospel.
Sometimes, when we study the scriptures, it can feel like we're trying to pin down a promise—a covenant, a commandment, a divine assurance—and it seems so solid, so set in stone. We might think, 'This is what it always was, and it will always be this way.' But if you’ve spent time in the field, or even just studying in a Book Club setting, you know that the Spirit often whispers that the Lord’s plan is richer, deeper, and more layered than what we can grasp in one sitting.
It’s one of the most beautiful, and sometimes most challenging, aspects of our theology: revelation is ongoing. The covenants we receive, and the covenants we find written in the ancient records, are not meant to be static snapshots. They are narratives of unfolding grace.
I was recently listening to a discussion about the Abrahamic covenant, and it really struck me how the scriptures build meaning over time. We talk about covenants, and we often think of them as a single, fixed agreement. But the way the scripture writers weave together the promise to Abraham—the land, the posterity, the blessing to all nations—and then later layer in the requirement of trust, like the test in Genesis 22, shows us something profound.
The original covenant was about physical blessings and lineage. But as time passed, and as the Savior’s role became clearer, the meaning deepened. It wasn't that the first promise was wrong; it was that the promise was *expanded* upon. The later passages didn't erase the earlier ones; they added a new, vital layer of understanding—a layer pointing directly to the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
This principle is so vital for us as disciples, whether we’re preparing for mission discussions or just trying to understand the scope of the plan of salvation. We can’t treat doctrine like a set of separate, isolated facts. We have to see the threads connecting them.
Think about it: The covenant is a living thing. It requires our faith, yes, but it also requires us to be receptive to the Spirit as it clarifies the meaning for us, the recipients. It’s a beautiful model for how we approach our own discipleship. We learn what the Lord wants us to know today, building upon what we learned yesterday, all pointing toward the ultimate fulfillment in Christ.
If you’ve been feeling like your understanding of a doctrine feels a bit... incomplete, or if you’re wrestling with how one scripture passage relates to another, I highly recommend diving into the discussions on this. Listening to the full episode on Genesis and Abraham really helped frame this idea for me.
As we continue our journey to be more like Christ—to be more Christlike—let’s practice this 'layering' principle in our own lives. When you read the Book of Mormon, don't just read the story; ask yourself, 'What layer of meaning is this adding to the covenant promises we already know?'
For a practical way to keep this principle alive, I encourage you to use the Social Scripture Study layer in LivingBook this week. Find a passage you feel is foundational, and see what insights others have added to it. It’s a wonderful way to see how the community is helping to build up the understanding of the gospel together. Remember, every member can be an Internet missionary, and that means studying together, always.
If you’re looking for more deep dives into scripture, check out the Book Club options in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful place to wrestle with these big concepts alongside fellow disciples.
