Sometimes you just sit back, maybe after a quiet Sunday, and you can’t help but wonder: What is happening out there? We hear snippets of conversation, we read headlines, and sometimes, the noise of the world feels overwhelming. It can make you question what it all means, right?

It reminds me of something I was thinking about recently—the idea of people "waking up." It’s a concept that echoes through our scriptures, isn't it? It speaks to a spiritual awakening, a turning of the heart toward the Savior. When we talk about the work, we are fundamentally talking about helping others wake up to the truth of the restored gospel.

I was listening to a talk recently, and the speaker touched on this very idea—the increasing awareness happening in the world. While the specifics of what’s happening in any given corner of the earth can feel chaotic, the underlying principle remains the same: the light of the gospel is powerful, and it eventually shines through the deepest darkness.

The Disciple's Lens: What Does "Waking Up" Mean for Us?

As returned missionaries, and as disciples anywhere, all the time, we are trained to look past the noise and see the eternal pattern. When people are "waking up," it means they are starting to ask the hard questions. Think about the questions your investigators are asking you today, or the deep thoughts you’re having while studying the Book of Mormon. Those are signs of awakening! Those moments are gifts. They are the fertile ground where the Spirit can plant seeds.

Remember that the Spirit doesn't whisper only to the quiet moments. Sometimes, it pushes us to speak up, to be brave, and to share what we know, even when it feels uncomfortable. That’s the Spirit guiding us into the field.

It requires us to be prepared. Preparation isn't just about memorizing scripture passages for a mission discussion; it’s about cultivating a constant, deep, personal relationship with the Savior. It’s about making sure that when the opportunity—or the question—comes, we are ready to answer with clarity, compassion, and genuine testimony.

Mission Prep Skill: Handling the "Why Now?" Question

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the current state of the world, keep this skill handy. When someone asks, "Why are things so chaotic right now?" don't just answer with politics. Pivot back to the eternal narrative. You can say something like, "It can feel chaotic, but from an eternal perspective, it’s often a time when people are forced to look inward. The gospel is always relevant because the human heart's needs—for forgiveness, for purpose, for connection to God—never change."

This keeps the focus on the unchanging truth of the restored gospel, which is always the best anchor.
