When Following the Light: Finding True Holiness in the Gospel

Sometimes, the most profound spiritual awakenings don't come from comfortable study sessions or perfectly curated online feeds. Sometimes, they come from confronting uncomfortable truths—the kind that make you pause, question everything you thought you knew, and feel the Holy Ghost gently nudge you toward a deeper examination.

I was recently struck by a powerful testimony from a sister who shared her journey away from Islam. What resonated with me, and what I hope will resonate with you as we continue building Zion together, was the sheer weight of *standard*—the standard of holiness. She spoke of learning about her faith's founder, and while initially finding aspects admirable, she eventually encountered teachings that simply did not align with the pure, unconditional love she had come to feel through her own study of the restored gospel.

The Weight of the Standard

It’s one thing to read doctrine; it’s another thing entirely to live by a standard that demands Christlike perfection. She shared stories of practices and teachings that, upon closer inspection, seemed to contradict the boundless grace we know is available through Jesus Christ. It wasn't just a disagreement on a minor point; it was a fundamental difference in the nature of the Savior’s atonement and the covenant path.

Think about the contrast she drew: the difference between a law-based condemnation and the boundless mercy offered through the Atonement. When she recounted the story of the woman brought before Jesus—the accusation, the law, and then the Savior’s gentle, yet absolute, declaration: “Whoever of you has not committed any sin should cast the first stone.”

“And in that way he saved her life and he himself is sinless. If he wanted to kill her he could have cast the first stone but he didn't. He saved her life.”

That moment, my friends, is the heart of the gospel. It’s the difference between following a set of rules and following a perfect, redeeming love. It’s the difference between obligation and discipleship born out of gratitude for grace. When you follow someone, you want to follow them because they are holy, because they are good, because they are kind—and that goodness points directly back to the Savior.

Be Christlike in the Field

This experience is a beautiful, real-world example of what it means to be an internet missionary, or any disciple anywhere, all the time. We are constantly being asked to discern what is truly Christlike. As we prepare for our own missions, or as we simply share the gospel with neighbors, we must always ask: Does this teaching, this practice, this belief, elevate the Savior, or does it build a wall between the person and Him?
