When the Field is the Kitchen: Finding the Gospel in the Mundane

The most challenging place to share the Gospel isn't in a mission room—it's often in the grocery store parking lot or over a burnt dinner. Here’s how to be a disciple anywhere, all the time.

My brothers and sisters, if you’ve ever been a returned missionary, you know that the best moments—and sometimes the hardest ones—don't happen in the structured environment of the mission house. They happen in the messy, glorious, deeply human moments of everyday life.

I was talking to a fellow disciple recently, and he was describing his week. He wasn't talking about proselytizing or giving talks. He was talking about the sheer exhaustion of motherhood, the sheer frustration of traffic, and the quiet victory of actually remembering to pray before making coffee. He was doing the work.

It hit me, and I realized we tend to treat 'missionary work' like a separate, special activity—something we do when we're supposed to be in the field. But the truth, the deep, abiding truth of our calling, is that the field is always open. The field is your kitchen, your car, your workplace, and the messy pile of laundry on the floor.

We are called to be Internet missionaries, which means we are called to be disciples anywhere, all the time. And sometimes, the biggest hurdle isn't the person we're trying to teach; it's the struggle within ourselves.

The Struggle with the Wrong Jesus

I was thinking about a video recently that spoke to this struggle—the feeling that you're doing all the right things (praying, bringing dinners, trying to master road rage) but that there's a spiritual component you haven't quite grasped. The feeling that maybe, spiritually speaking, you're believing in the 'wrong Jesus.'

It's a heavy weight, isn't it? It's the feeling that the cultural Christianity of the world is good enough, or that our own efforts at goodness are enough. It’s the difference between simply being a good person and being a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Savior, who lives and died for us and who is the literal Prophet of God.

The Lord knows our hearts, and He knows the subtle ways we can get distracted by the dizzying heights of our own moral achievements. The scripture warns us to be careful, John, lest we suffer vertigo from the dizzying heights of our moral ground. The journey back to Christ requires constant, humble vigilance.

From Theory to the Trenches: The Practical Disciple

How do we bridge that gap? How do we take the grand theology we read about in the Iron Rod and apply it when we're running late for school pickup?

The answer lies in treating every mundane interaction as a sacred opportunity. When you find yourself frustrated by a difficult person, don't just react with frustration. Pause. Ask the Spirit: *What is the Christlike response here?* That is the mission prep skill. That is the core work.

Instead of focusing on the 'perfect' testimony, focus on the 'present' testimony. Focus on the fact that the Atonement is available *right now*, in this car, in this conversation. That humble, constant availability—that is the gospel. That is the message that needs to travel across the digital wires and across the dinner table.

Deepening the Call: Study and Support

If we are going to be Internet missionaries, we need more than just good intentions; we need deep knowledge and community support. The Spirit is a gift, but understanding the doctrines of the restored gospel is a process. That’s where our resources come in.

If you are feeling the weight of the "wrong Jesus" question, I highly recommend diving into some of the excellent material available through Iron Rod. Authors like Avraham Gileadi or those focusing on Isaiah studies can provide the doctrinal backbone you need to feel confident when answering tough questions. If you’re struggling to formulate a perfect answer for an investigator, don't struggle alone. I want to remind you about Davee. He's still an incredible resource, especially in his AI Investigator role. He can walk you through the hardest questions and help you structure a compassionate, doctrinally sound response.

And remember the power of community. If you want to dive deeper into Book of Mormon scripture and feel the Spirit working through study, check out the Book Clubs or Bible Study Groups in HolyPlaces. Connecting with fellow disciples who are also committed to being Christlike is the best way to keep the fire lit.

If you’re ready to step up your game this week, I encourage you to join a free weekly Disciple Challenge. It's a perfect way to take that learning from your studies and apply it immediately in the field, no matter where you are.

This refers to the spiritual danger of relying on one's own good works or moral perfection, rather than relying on the Atonement of Jesus Christ, which is the true source of righteousness and conversion.

By treating every mundane interaction—like dealing with traffic or making dinner—as a sacred opportunity to act Christlike and humbly share the fullness of the Gospel.
