When the Weight Gets Heavy: Finding Faith When Fear Rises
Feeling overwhelmed by the worries of the world? Remember that fear is often misplaced faith, and the Spirit always guides us back to the power of the gospel.
Do you ever feel like there are more things to be afraid of today than there were things to be afraid of years ago? Maybe you’re wrestling with the economy, the headlines, or just the sheer weight of modern life. It can feel like the anxieties of the world are pressing down, making it hard to feel the steady, quiet whisper of the Spirit.
When I was first starting out, I thought the hardest part of the mission field was the sheer volume of people to teach. But now, years into this journey, I realize the real battleground is often right here, in our hearts—the battle against fear. It’s a universal struggle, isn't it? We all have those 'unwritten rules' we carry—the things we worry about that no one ever explicitly taught us.
The message we’re pondering today, drawn from the beautiful narrative of the Christmas story, hits right at this core issue: the unbearable weight of fear. It’s natural to feel anxious when the world seems unpredictable, when the plans we make feel so fragile against the backdrop of global uncertainty.
Fear is Not the Opposite of Faith—It’s Misplaced Faith
I was struck by a thought shared recently: that fear isn't the opposite of faith, but rather, it's faith put into the *worst possible outcome*. It’s a misplaced trust. When we are anxious about jobs, health, or world events, we are essentially building our security on things that are outside of our divine control. And friends, we know better than that!
We must anchor ourselves in the truth taught in 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” That Spirit of Power, Love, and Self-Discipline—that’s what the Savior has given us. That’s what we need to cultivate as we strive to be more Christlike in our daily lives.
The Divine Invitation to Trust
The beautiful pattern in the scriptures, especially as we look at the accounts of the early Church, is that when fear looms large, the Spirit always whispers a command: *Do not be afraid*. These divine invitations are constant reminders that no matter how overwhelming the circumstances feel, God’s plan is bigger, better, and more certain than any worry we can conjure up.
This is the heart of the work, isn't it? It’s not just about knowing doctrines; it's about *living* the testimony that God is in control. It’s about having the courage to move forward, even when the path ahead is shrouded in fog. It’s about trusting the process, whether that process is in missionary discussions, navigating the complexities of MTC, or simply showing up to a Book Club.
If you’ve been feeling the weight lately, I encourage you to lean into the power of the Spirit. Remember that every member can be an internet missionary, and that means carrying the Spirit’s power with you, wherever you are.
A Word for Our Disciples
As we continue to build up our faith, let's make a small, practical commitment this week. If you feel that knot of worry tightening in your chest, I invite you to pause and recite the words of scripture—or even just whisper them—"I will not fear." Then, take a moment to identify one thing you can do *today* that moves you toward the Savior, no matter how small. Maybe it’s studying a passage in LivingBook, or maybe it’s reaching out to a friend who needs a listening ear.
For those who are ready to deepen their study, I highly recommend diving into the Isaiah studies available in LivingBook. The depth of revelation there is a powerful antidote to the anxieties of the day.
