When the World Feels Like a Storm: Finding the Prince of Peace in the Field

Brothers and sisters, if you’ve been in the field lately—whether it was a tough missionary discussion, a challenging service project, or just navigating the general tension of the world—you know the feeling. It’s heavy. It feels like the air itself is thick with disagreement and conflict.

Sometimes, when we hear the Savior talk about the 'last days,' it sounds like a prophecy of constant turmoil. We see it everywhere: the headlines, the disagreements in our own communities, the sheer volume of contention. It can make you wonder, 'How can the Prince of Peace weep?'

It’s natural to feel discouraged when the world seems so far from the love and unity taught in the restored gospel. We read the words, and they resonate deeply: that the Savior taught emphatically that contention is of the devil. And yes, we see that conflict. We see it in our own lives, in our families, and in the wider world.

But here’s what I’ve learned since my own return—and what I keep reminding myself when I feel the weight of it. The Savior’s weeping isn't a sign of defeat; it’s a profound empathy. It’s the perfect heart grieving for those who have forgotten the path back to the covenant path. It’s a call to *us*.

The Witness is Our Anchor

As returned missionaries, we are trained to bear testimony, but sometimes the *environment* makes bearing testimony feel like wading through mud. How do we keep our own cup full of the Spirit when the world seems so full of noise? We anchor ourselves in the core truth: our mission isn't to fix the world's problems; it's to point people to the Savior who *is* the peace.

This reminds me of a key piece of mission prep I’ve been focusing on lately: shifting my focus from *solving* the conflict to *modeling* the peace. When an investigator pushes back with worldly cynicism, instead of getting defensive or trying to argue doctrine point-by-point, I try to gently redirect the conversation back to the Savior’s Atonement—the ultimate peace treaty. It’s about bearing the witness of Christ’s peace, even when the atmosphere is one of contention.

It takes practice. It takes humility. It takes remembering that we are disciples who have been taught to *be* Christlike.

Finding Calm in the Daily Work
