When 'Why?' Meets the Spirit: Understanding Divine Sovereignty

Brothers and sisters, as we gather together in our digital mission field, we are constantly being asked the deepest questions. We’re talking about the 'why' behind the moments that feel random, the pain that seems undeserved, or the seemingly impossible blessings that arrive just when we need them most. It’s the big one: Is it true that everything happens for a reason?

If you’ve ever wrestled with this question—maybe after a tough transfer, or when watching a companion struggle with hardship—you know the weight of it. We want to believe that the hand of the Lord is guiding every single thread, but how does that work when life feels like a chaotic mess of coincidences?

I recently spent some time reviewing some excellent teaching on this topic, and it really brought clarity to the doctrine of God’s sovereignty. It’s a concept that can sound lofty and abstract, but when you anchor it in the pattern of the gospel, it becomes incredibly comforting and deeply empowering for our discipleship.

The Unseen Hand: Understanding Divine Sovereignty

The short answer, as the teaching confirms, is yes. Because God is sovereign, there are no truly random, out-of-control happenings. God’s purposes might be hidden from our limited perspective—just like the disciples misunderstood the reason for the man's blindness in John 9—but we can be assured that every event has a purpose woven into it.

More Than Just Coincidence

The natural tendency when faced with mystery is to point to 'coincidence.' But the gospel invites us to look deeper. The teaching outlined several powerful pillars that help us understand this divine orchestration:

1. The Law of Cause and Effect (Sowing and Reaping): This is the principle Paul taught us so well: we reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7–8). In our discipleship, this means every word we utter, every action we take—whether we are studying scripture in a Book Club or simply interacting with a neighbor—is an investment. Are we sowing to the flesh, or are we sowing to the Spirit? The harvest follows the seed, always.
2. The Fall and Redemption: We must acknowledge the reality of the fallen world (Genesis 3). Illness, natural disaster, and death are realities we face. But even in these struggles, the Lord works. Sometimes it’s a test to strengthen faith; sometimes, it’s a gentle discipline, all done in love.
3. The Providence of God: This is where God quietly and invisibly works through the natural processes of the universe. He doesn't just *allow* things to happen; He works *through* them to achieve His ultimate, good end. The book of Esther is a perfect example of this divine providence at work!

Application: Becoming an Internet Missionary

As we strive to be Christlike in every facet of our lives—whether we are in the MTC, serving as companions, or simply connecting with someone online—this doctrine becomes our anchor. It shifts our focus from *why* something bad happened to *what* we can do with the blessings and lessons right in front of us. It helps us see the divine pattern even when we are confused.

Remember, every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. When the tough questions arise—like, “Why did this happen to me?”—we can draw strength from Romans 8:28: “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
